Plastic Surgery Do’s and Don’ts

DO

  • Thoroughly investigate your potential doctor. Not just Board Certification (ABPS.org) but state and hospital credentials.
  • Take a friend / spouse / relative with you to the consultation and compare notes later.
  • Turn your intuition on HIGH when you visit a new office. Keep on the lookout for things that don’t “feel” right.
  • Make certain you fully understand (do not assume) the surgical plan including the procedure, the benefits, the alternatives, the discomfort level, the recovery, the possible problems, and the comprehensive fees.
  • Have a backup plan if something goes wrong. Resolve to seek a second opinion after two failed attempts to give you results you expected.

DO NOT

  • TAKE A CHILD WITH YOU TO THE CONSULTATION.
  • Have surgery with a doctor who is too important to talk to you personally or one who “tells” you what you need without asking what you “want”.
  • Be impressed with the “wall candy”. Studies have shown that in the presence of an “Expert” some important parts of your brain responsible for decisions can turn off.
  • Take the recommendation of a plastic surgeon from your family or friends without doing your own investigation. This advice can be very dangerous.
  • Consider any procedure that you cannot fully understand the benefits, the risks and the alternatives.
  • Have a surgical procedure in a facility until you have checked on the facility credentials. Remember some office OR’s are built because the doctor is not qualified to work at a hospital.
  • Assume that the State, Government, Boards, Attorneys, Hospitals, Associations or Certifications are “looking out for you”.

They’re Not! YOU HAVE TO DO IT YOURSELF.
