This procedure generally is performed on an outpatient basis under general
anesthesia, either in a free-standing surgical center or in the
office.
The incision begins in the hair above the ear and follows the front
edge of the ear. Once a portion of the skin is lifted, the underlying
tissues are also rebalanced for a more natural look. The excess skin is
tightened and trimmed. Sometimes an endoscope is used to place deep
anchoring sutures for better durability. Drains are seldom necessary,
but may be used overnight at most.
